Becoming Our Best

BREATHE DEEPLY

This is the time of year that drives us to the edge: Christmas parties, selection of presents, end-of-year projects, cold season coming on and so much more. The wonder is that we make it through these few weeks each year. In defense of the Holiday season, it was not originally meant to be a time of incessant activity, rather it was a special moment at the end of the year to recollect about our place with God, family, friends and ourselves.

But the reality of things is here, and we are all busily doing stuff to just get through these coming weeks. Is there a better way? I think so. But first we need to slow down and get our priorities straight. Try this method:

•  Take 3 deep breaths and empty your mind for a moment

•  Reflect on what is important for your long term balance and success

•  Start on the most important task and finish it. Then move on to the next. Fill in with urgent tasks between the important ones.

•  Help your team set its priorities and achieve the important.

•  Don't let urgent tasks overwhelm the important ones.

•  If you lose balance, go back to the first step and start over

Many of the things we do each day are smaller jobs which can be delayed, distractions such as personal phone calls and e-mail jokes, or just chatting instead of working.

Now is the time to resist those tempting distractions, bear down and get through the important tasks of our lives gracefully, and restore the joy of the Season. You and your team members will be thankful that you did!
